March Break Ideas With Sarah Gage

Are you feeling the pressure to be super-mom and provide your kids with the most amazing March break experience ever? Expensive vacations are only one of the ways to spend March break.

The pressure to outdo previous March breaks or to keep up with the Joneses can lead to overspending. With some planning and creativity, I believe March break doesn’t need to break the bank.

Keep in mind that kids often don’t understand the cost or value of a purchase. If you’re on a budget, focus on creating experiences and memories that last a lifetime but don’t necessarily cost a lot.

Here are some ideas that are inexpensive or free!

  1. Schedule play dates. Each parent can have a theme, or you can just let the kids use their imagination! Swapping play days provides free childcare while giving your son or daughter a new and different experience.

  2. Be a tourist in your own city. Many communities have activities schedules online, with plenty of activities to choose from. Are there museums or historical sites that you take for granted but tourists would pay for?

  3. Do free stuff. Research parks and trails in your area and try a new one each day. And, of course, the local library is always free.

Finally, I recommend a daily gratitude practice. Gratitude is the greatest predictor of long-term happiness. Ask your kids what their favourite part of any day or activity was. This will lock in their favourite memories and focus their attention on the positive.
